A message from the Winchester Area NAACP

All Members of the Winchester Area NAACP (whether or not you live in the City of Winchester)

I'm sure most if not all of you are aware of the recent tragic fatal shooting of nine African Americans at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., and the outcry that has mounted and escalated with the call for removing the Confederate flag from the South Carolina State House, as well as its numerous other venues.

Well, that same Confederate flag is part of the City of Winchester Seal as highlighted in a recent article by the Winchester Star. In response to the support for removal of the Confederate flag  by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, both of S.C. senators, along with numerous other state, local, and national leaders, the Winchester City Council has put this issue on it agenda for its July 14 meeting (7:00pm). A letter from President Gwen Borders-Walker will be going to Winchester Mayor Elizabeth Minor and City Council President John Willingham as an official NAACP request for removal of the Confederate flag from the Seal.

To help insure the prospects of our request getting a favorable response, there are THREE VERY IMPORTANT THINGS WE NEED YOU TO DO:
1. Please put the date and time on your calendar, and commit to joining us at Rouss City Hall (15 N Cameron St.) to show your support for removal of the flag. COME EARLY!!

2. Write a letter to the Editor of the Winchester Star expressing your support for removal of the flag. (This need not be more  than a paragraph or two...we just need to get as many letters as possible in the Star for impact...and to let the City Council see that we have broad support for this action. (Email to:

3. Contact your minister and/or other appropriate church officials to encourage the church's support and their presence at the City Council meeting. Also, contact any other IMPORTANT PEOPLE YOU KNOW.

Thank you for you efforts in helping us achieve this very important goal.
