THE SCIENCE OF OUR SUCCESS: THE BROWN FAMILY STORY

This is a Reader’s Theater based on the lives of the children of Charles C. and Maria Fairfax Brown of Winchester, Virginia.

The Browns were a prominent and wealthy African American family in the late 1800s. This family was once called, “A Family Steeped in the History of America”. Six siblings born to this family became successful medical or pharmaceutical doctors.

This play was written by Judy Humbert and Sharon Dixon.

HISTORY’S NEXT CHAPTER: BUILDING THE BELOVED COMMUNITY

Dr. John Copenhaver, Professor of Emeritus of Religion and Philosophy from Shenandoah University, will lead a discussion on how we can write history’s next chapter. This program is in celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Co-sponsors are the Winchester Area NAACP, the Valley Interfaith Council and the Friends of Handley Regional Library.

JAZZ Competition

ESSENTIALLY ELLINGTON REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BAND COMPETITION AND FESTIVAL

Shenandoah Conservatory has been selected as a site for this annual festival! This education-focused festival, co-produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center, is designed to offer high school jazz bands of all levels the opportunity to perform the music of Duke Ellington and other seminal big band composers and arrangers. Bands participating receive professional feedback from jazz professionals in their own background.

The JOHN KIRBY STORY will be performed at the festival. Please check Shenandoah University’s website for scheduled details about the festival. The Winchester Area NAACP is one of the sponsors of this event.
